The 4-wire flat trailer connector is by far the most
common trailer wiring connector on the road today. For many vehicles that
have a common taillight/turn signal system (see below*) it provides a
simple, easy connection between the tow vehicle and the trailer. The connectors
show on this page can be used as replacements or extensions to current
4-wire flat connector systems. If you are familiar with your vehicle wiring
system and want to install a simple 4-wire flat plug like those shown
here, we recommend this universal
(common bulb) trailer wiring kit (click here), which includes the
4-wire connector and other components that will make the installation
easier (such as splice nuts which eliminate the need to cut, solder, or
tape any wire).

* - You can tell if your
tow vehicle (car, truck, station wagon, van or SUV) has a common
tail light / turn signal system by looking at the taillights
(you may have to remove the plastic lens). If the brake light and turn
signal are inside a single bulb it is a COMMON bulb system.
If you have separate bulbs for the brake light and the
turn signal then it is an independent bulb system (CLICK
HERE for a universal (independent bulb) trailer wiring kit)
NOTE: We strongly recommend searching this site (use
your vehicle year, make and model information) for a Custom Trailer
Wiring Kit. If one is available it will contain all the necessary parts
you need for your vehicle, will be easier to install, and will provide
a more secure connection.
