Brake Controllers

Brake Controls are recommended to add to your vehicle / trailer set up to make towing and braking a smoother operation. The Brake Controller connects your tow vehicle brake system with the trailer braking system, Tekonsha Brake Controllersupplying the power from your tow vehicle to the trailer and allowing the brakes to work at the same time between the two. There are two brake controller options typically used. The Proportional Brake Controller or a Time Delayed Brake Controller.

The specific type, brand or function of the brake controller you choose will vary depending on the vehicle control, the weight class of trailer, the tow vehicle capabilities among other factors. You'll want to know how many brakes you're in need of controlling, the wiring set up in your tow vehicle and then decide which brake control style you'd prefer.

Proportional Brake Controllers have a direct relationship between the tow vehicle and the trailer, utilizing the actual braking and deceleration of your vehicle and then engaging the braking system of the trailer at the same rate. In other words, the technology with in this type of system can sense how quickly the vehicle is stopping, and can apply the same amount of braking to the trailer, giving you a smooth stop.

Timed Brake Controllers, sometimes called a Solid State or Time Delayed Brake Controller, has a set amount of braking it applies based on presets in the controller. So the braking information is sent to the trailer and is applied over a set amount of time, rather then in direct proportion to the vehicle stopping. So when you step on your brakes, braking power is sent to the trailer brakes and it uses the predetermined settings to ramp up to full braking power. These units are easy to set up and are typically installed quickly and are especially useful with older model Original Equipment wiring, located under the dash.

Draw-tite Breakaway Kit Breakaway Kits are also an important component to consider when towing and using a brake control system. A Breakaway Kit will apply the trailers own electric braking system should the trailer and the tow vehicle become disconnected while moving. They are required by some states, please verify your local ordinances.
